Jo Nesbo is a Norwegian writer and musician, known for his detective novels featuring Inspector Harry Hole and his children's books about Doctor Proctor. He was born on March 29, 1960, in Oslo, Norway.

Early Life and Education

Nesbo grew up in Molde, a town in western Norway. His mother worked as a librarian, sparking his early interest in literature. In his youth, he was also passionate about football and played for the football club "Molde" until a serious knee injury ended his career at the age of 17. Despite mediocre grades in school due to his football pursuits, Nesbo served in the army for three years and actively pursued self-education.

After completing his military service, Nesbo attended the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration, where he studied economics. Upon graduating, he worked as a broker and journalist.

Musical Career

In 1992, Nesbo founded the rock band Di Derre, where he served as the lead vocalist and songwriter. The band gained significant popularity in Norway, with their album "Jenter & sånn" reaching the first place in sales according to VG-lista in 1994.

Literary Career

In 1997, Nesbo published his first novel, "The Bat," which received positive reviews from critics. This marked the beginning of his successful career as a writer. His most famous works revolve around Inspector Harry Hole, a detective in the Oslo Police Department. Despite his struggle with alcoholism, Harry Hole solves crimes in Oslo and occasionally in other countries, battling serial killers, bank robbers, and members of the Russian mafia. Nesbo's novels are known for their multi-layered plots and gripping suspense.

He has also written a series of children's books featuring Doctor Proctor, a quirky and eccentric professor, along with his neighbors Lisa and Bulle. These books emphasize the importance of embracing one's true self and the power of imagination.

Nesbo has also written under the pseudonym Tom Johansen, penning several novels such as "Blood on Snow," "More Blood on the Water," and "The Kidnapping."

Personal Life and Philanthropy

Nesbo is an avid rock climber, having conquered alpine routes of category 7c. He currently resides in Oslo, living near his ex-wife and daughter. In 2008, he established the Harry Hole Foundation, which aims to provide education in reading and writing to children in developing countries.

Other Projects

Nesbo's concept for the television series "Okkupert" (Occupied) was produced jointly by NRK in Norway and the Franco-German network Arte. The series, released in 2015, is described as a multi-layered political thriller that explores a fictional scenario where Russia invades Norway to ensure uninterrupted oil and gas supplies to Europe.
