Joe DiMaggio, full name Joseph Paul DiMaggio, was born in 1914 in Martinez, California. His parents, Giuseppe and Rosalia DiMaggio, were Italian immigrants whose ancestors had been fishermen for generations. Joe grew up in San Francisco, California, where he attended school. Despite his father's expectations for him to work on the family boat, Joe was determined to pursue a career in baseball from a young age.

Joe's professional baseball career began thanks to his older brother, who played for the San Francisco Seals. His brother convinced the coach to give Joe a chance, and he quickly excelled. Joe earned a spot in the team's starting lineup as a shortstop, and his debut game took place on October 1, 1932. Within a year, DiMaggio set his first record by hitting at least one ball in each of over 60 games. He once said, "Baseball never meant more to me than it does now. To hit a ball a day has become even more important to me than sleep or food."

In 1934, Joe almost ended his career prematurely when he injured his left knee ligaments after falling off a bus near his sister's house. The San Francisco Seals decided to sell him, and the New York Yankees immediately expressed interest. After a thorough examination, the Yankees' team doctor assured Joe that the injury would not hinder his future in the sport. His first game for the Yankees took place on May 3, 1936, and he consistently contributed to his team's victories. During his 13 years with the Yankees, DiMaggio won the World Series nine times. Hank Greenberg once said, "To beat the Yankees, you have to send the ball in the opposite direction of Joe, which was rarely achieved."

In 1939, a commentator at a stadium compared DiMaggio to a new fighter plane, earning him the nickname "The Yankee Clipper" that quickly spread throughout the baseball world. In 1949, DiMaggio became the first baseball player in history to have an annual salary exceeding $100,000. However, after a disappointing 1951 season, he announced his retirement. In an interview, he stated, "I feel like I've passed the stage where I can help my team. The last season was, to be honest, unsuccessful. Even if I hit several home runs in a game, it wouldn't change my decision. I've grown older and it's harder for me to stay in shape and give my best. I decided that baseball is my beloved game, not a way to make money. I made the decision to leave the sport."

In 1955, DiMaggio was finally inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was briefly married to Marilyn Monroe, with their wedding taking place in 1954. In the 1970s, he frequently appeared on television sports shows and occasionally in commercials. Throughout his life, Joe was a heavy smoker, which eventually led to lung problems and cancer.

On March 8, 1999, Joe DiMaggio passed away at his home in Hollywood, Florida, at the age of 84. Shortly after his death, the New York Yankees erected a memorial in his honor at their stadium.
