Biography of Mark Cuban
Mark Cuban is an American entrepreneur and billionaire, best known as the owner of the professional basketball team, the Dallas Mavericks, and the American television channel, HDNet. He was born on July 31, 1958, in Pittsburgh, United States. Cuban grew up in Pennsylvania, in a working-class Jewish family. His father, Norton, was a car upholsterer.
Cuban's first taste of the business world came at a young age when he sold plastic garbage bags to buy a pair of high-quality basketball shoes. He also traded greeting cards, magazines, and beer, and held various jobs such as a bartender and disco dance instructor. He paid for his college education by collecting and selling stamps, once earning $1,100. Instead of attending high school, he enrolled in the University of Pittsburgh and later transferred to Indiana University, Bloomington, graduating in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in management.
After moving to Dallas, Texas in 1982, Cuban worked as a bartender before becoming a salesperson for "Your Business Software," one of the first retail software distribution companies in Dallas. In 1983, he founded his own computer consulting company, MicroSolutions, where he worked tirelessly, often putting in 12-15 hour days, month after month, year after year. His philosophy was simple: "Say 'yes' to the customer, no matter what they ask for." He eventually sold the company to his landlord, Perot Systems, in 1990 for $30 million.
In 1995, Cuban founded the internet company, broadcast.com. The company initially streamed radio and telecasts of Indiana University basketball games, but soon expanded to include other universities. In 1999, the internet giant Yahoo acquired broadcast.com, making Cuban a billionaire. He used his wealth to purchase a mansion in Dallas and a Gulfstream V jet for $41 million. In the same year, Cuban bought the Dallas Mavericks basketball team for $280 million.
Cuban quickly made an impact as the owner of the Mavericks, promising to strengthen the team and engage with fans. He hired additional coaching staff, signed long-term contracts with key players, and even employed scouts to search for European talent. Cuban also made sure to provide fans with memorable experiences at games.
His ownership of the team brought him both admiration and controversy. Cuban became known for his passionate involvement in games, often arguing with referees while wearing his trademark worn jeans. Despite the attention, the players and coaches of the Mavericks supported his actions.
In addition to his business ventures, Cuban has been involved in radio and journalism. In 2006, he announced plans to host his own radio talk show, but the show never materialized. He also funded Sharesleuth.com, a website dedicated to exposing fraud and misinformation in public company sales. Although the website faced criticism, it contributed to the growth of independent online journalism.
Outside of his professional life, Cuban married Tiffany Stewart in September 2002. They have two daughters together and reside in Dallas in a mansion worth $13 million. In 2008, Cuban faced a civil lawsuit from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, accusing him of insider trading. He denied the allegations, calling them false and a result of prosecutorial misconduct.
Mark Cuban's success as an entrepreneur and his dedication to the Dallas Mavericks have established him as a prominent figure in the business and sports world. Through his leadership, the team has become one of the strongest contenders in the NBA. Cuban's commitment to his word and his connection with fans have solidified his place as a respected owner in the league.
